Open-source ObjectWeb merges with Orientware

Starting this week, the France-based open-source consortium ObjectWeb is operating as a new entity, called OW2, which was formed by merging ObjectWeb with the Chinese IT institute Orientware.

ObjectWeb, which was funded by French organizations and hosted by the INRIA research institute, is dedicated to building open-source middleware. It created the Jonas Java application server as well as several other components.

Last year, ObjectWeb established a technical collaboration partnership with OrientWare, a consortium of Chinese universities and software companies also writing open-source middleware.

The OW2 Consortium will have a different funding model, relying on membership dues rather than government funding, according to Francois Letellier, the former executive director of ObjectWeb.
