Nokia N8 gets DABsolutely fabulous with DAB headset

Nokia has announced a DAB radio headset for the N8 phone and its Symbian 3 stablemates, giving you a wealth of music and chat on the go.

The headset plays DAB and DAB+ radio, firing up automatically when plugged into the phone's micro-USB port. It has a 3.5mm jack so you can listen with your own headphones, or use those supplied. Volume, channel and call handling controls are built-in to an inline remote.

The headset works with phones rocking the USB-To-Go function in the new Symbian 3 operating system, like the N8, E7 and C7. Software on your phone allows you to save stations, see information about the song and artist you're listening to, and tune into the best reception for a given station.

We've been dubious about the quality of DAB in the past, but it does provide a greater range of radio stations than FM radio. You can now listen to the likes of BBC 6Music, Heat, Heart and Kerrang!, as well as all the versions of Magic FM your ears can stand.

The BBC today announced a new high-quality HD radio system to be served over the Web. DAB still has the advantage that it won't eat your data allowance.

The DAB headset will be available before the end of this year and will cost £40. A DVB-H television adaptor is also available, using the same USB-To-Go technology.
