The update, which will be delivered for free via Wi-Fi, finally provides 3DS owners with features that many felt were a vital lack on the console's launch.

To celebrate, Nintendo is offering NES game Excitebike for free until 7 July via the eShop. Other titles will include Game Boy titles Super Mario Land, Alleyway and Tennis, with new content added to the shop every Thursday.

Also available will be the Pokédex 3D. This allows you to view your Pokémon in 3D, as you might imagine, but will also have a raft of other nifty features. You can use the Nintendo Augmented Reality Markers to view your Pokémon in your environment and even have your picture taken with them, as well as complete the Pokédex using the SpotPass.

The update goes live Tuesday, 7 June.
