Net retailers join forces

CDnow, Cyberian Outpost, eToys, and Reel.com plan to launch an e-commerce site together, hoping the added convenience will attract customers.

Four major Web retailers today are jointly launching a shopping network featuring all the firms' products.

CDnow, Cyberian Outpost, eToys, and Reel.com said they plan to launch the site in November.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The firms are banding together in hopes the added convenience of having all their products in one place will add to their holiday sales numbers.

With e-commerce booming, all the sites face stiff competition--along with having to attract customers from offline stores.

For instance, CDnow, which says it spearheaded the alliance, faces the formidable Amazon.com. The bookseller began offering music for sale on its site in June.

"This alliance of established e-commerce sites will make it easy for consumers to make informed buying decisions," Darryl Peck, Cyberian Outpost's founder, president, and chief executive, said in a statement.

The network will act as a giant referral service, with the participants sending customers to a hub page that will feature special promotions.
