When the original "Muppet Show" was good, it was great. Statler and Waldorf, The Swedish Chef, Kermit slowly losing his mind as his cast and guest stars unrolled their insanity all around him. And of course, "Pigs in Space," the Star Trek-spoofing, pig-starring sci-fi soap opera where Captain Link Hogthrob, Dr. Julius Strangepork and the indomitable First Mate Piggy voyaged on the USS Swinetrek.
"Pigs in Space" earned a reboot of sorts with "Pigs in Space: Deep Dish Nine," which appeared on "Muppets Tonight" back in 1996. But then the crew was lost in space until this Friday, when they landed on a little undiscovered planet known as YouTube.
The new YouTube video, dubbed "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," could also have been called "In Space, No One Can Hear You Squeal," because it's a spot-on parody of none other than Ridley Scott's 1979 blockbuster "Alien." Pepe the King Prawn, who was always one of the most alien-looking of an intensely alien-appearing cast, gets to play the newly born chest-burster. Not sure we've ever seen Muppet intestines before, but there's a first time for everything.
There are pig jokes, bad puns, worse puns, booming-voiced narration, Miss Piggy being Miss Piggy, and pretty much everything else you remember from the "Muppet Show"-era "Pigs in Space" sketches.
