Mophie has a new iPhone 7 charging case, but it's not what you think

Mophie's new Hold Force case for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus has a magnetic back for adding accessories such as a battery pack and credit-card holder.

Back in May I wrote about Otterbox Universe, a new modular case system that the company billed as a platform for adding accessories to your phone. Now Mophie has launched Hold Force, its own modular case and accessory line for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

The concept is similar in that you buy a base case for your phone -- it costs $40 -- but instead of using a slot system, the Hold Force has a magnetic back to which you can attach various accessories, including a PowerStation Plus Mini battery, folio cover and credit card holder. (We're still waiting on international pricing.)

Mophie gave me a quick preview of the case a few weeks ago and I can say that the magnet system worked well, with the external battery adhering quite nicely to the case.

The Hold Force launch accessories list is short compared the Otterbox Universe list, but it may grow with time. Presumably, a car-mount and bike accessories would be in the works.

Here's what you can buy right now:

  • Hold Force PowerStation Plus Mini ($60): 4,000mAh rechargeable battery and integrated switch-tip cable with lightning and Micro-USB connectors.
  • Hold Force Folio Case ($20): Screen cover with three credit card pockets
  • Hold Force Wallet ($20): Adds two credit card pockets to back of case

I'll have a full review of the Hold Force system once I get my hands on a review sample.
