MIDDAY MARKETS: Tech rally coasts on

Techs were keeping up the rally at midday Tuesday, as deals from Sycamore and Lucent made waves in the networking sector. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 28.63 to 3,850.39 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 46.57 to 10,768.73.

The Inter@ctive Week @Net Index fell 2 to 483.55.

Sycamore (Nasdaq: SCMR), down 1 5/16 to 101 5/8, said the acquisition of Sirocco will beef up its product and services portfolio.

Lucent (NYSE: LU), up 3/16 to 64 3/16, announced a deal with Metromedia Fiber (Nasdaq: MFNX), down 7/16 to 37 9/16, as well as China Unicom and Fujitsu, aimed at the build-out of its fiber-optic networks in America and Asia. Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) was down 5/8 to 62 5/8, and Nortel (NYSE: NT) was down 15/16 to 59.

drkoop.com (Nasdaq: KOOP) raced ahead 1 3/32 to 2 7/8, or 61 percent Tuesday, after a dose of financial care from webofcare.com incited investors to buy shares in the bottomed-out stock.

Electronics For Imaging Inc. (Nasdaq: EFII) fell 10 3/4 to 24 after it warned that its second-quarter sales and earnings will fall well short of analysts' estimates.

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) rose 1 7/8 to 68 3/4.

Among other leading tech issues: Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) rose 1 1/2 to 44 1/4, Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) fell 7/32 to 132 11/32, Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW)fell 2 5/16 to 85 7/8 and Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) was down 2 13/16 to 78 3/4.

Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) lost 1 3/4 to 52 3/4, Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) gained 1 1/64 to 139 17/64 and America Online Inc. (NYSE: AOL) rose 13/16 to 55 13/16.
