Microsoft hires telecom exec

Microsoft said on Thursday that it has appointed Maria Martinez, a former Motorola executive, to serve as a vice president in its Communications and Mobile Solutions Unit. In her new role, Martinez will drive development of software and services aimed at wireless and wireline telecommunications carriers, cable television operators and media and entertainment companies, Microsoft said.

Martinez will also be responsible for the development of new services for the company's MapPoint business unit. The Communications and Mobile Solutions Unit is part of Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Devices division, the smallest of its seven business units. It generated only $156 million of the company's more than $32 billion in revenue in fiscal 2003.
