Mac OS X 10.3.x: Losing data due to system caching

MacFixIt reader Marisa Antonella reports an issue where certain applications lose "saved" data -- e.g., documents that have already been saved within an application -- after a crash, and asks for suggestions for avoiding such data loss:

"My business partner and I have exactly the same system, with the same apps (Panther running on a G4 with 1.5 GB of RAM). We have had apps suddenly quit on us (Illustrator CS especially) and have subsequently lost hours of already 'saved' data due to OS not yet having written the data to disk.

"Is there anyway to force the system to write data to the disk continually? Or is there a third party app we can use to do so?"
