Liberty Alliance taps temporary leader

A temporary president has been appointed to lead the Liberty Alliance Project, a consortium spawned by Sun Microsystems to simplify login processes by letting numerous Web sites use a single validation of a person's digital identity. Eric Dean, United Airlines chief technology officer and the former Liberty management board president, stepped down because he didn't have sufficient time to devote to the effort, the group said Friday. United will continue its involvement in the group.

Michael Barrett, vice president of Internet strategy for American Express and Liberty board vice president, will lead the group until a new president is elected. The Liberty group released the first version of its Web athentication standard in July and plans to release the first major update in the first quarter of 2003, the group said.
