Apple's latest update to the software that runs iPhones and iPads was meant in part to fix several bugs, but it seems to have created a new one, at least for some users of the popular gadgets.
According to posts on Apple's Support Communities website, the update, called Touch ID feature is slow, fails to recognize their fingerprint, or simply doesn't work., causes problems with the fingerprint sensor used to unlock a device's screen. After people install the update, the
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
The latest update to the company's iOS 9 operating system is the third since. The two earlier tweaks addressed issues with screens that froze.
Regardless of how many times a new product is tested before it hits the market, random problems will show up once it finds its way to millions of users. But Apple needs to avoid the trouble it bumped into last year with iOS 8, which earned a reputation as unstable.
In posts on the support forum, users who upgraded to iOS 9.1 describe a variety of problems they are experiencing with the latest update and Touch ID.
"The Touch ID was working normally before installing IOS 9.1, then after the restart and after entering low power mode, it stopped working," said a user with the screen name fentium.
"I'm using an iPhone 6S 64GB and upgraded to iOS 9.1 a few days ago," wrote a user with the moniker dan1207. "My Touch ID has become very slow or either doesn't work after several attempts, and I need to input my passcode."
Some users say they have tried performing a hard reboot (holding down the Power and Home buttons), but that doesn't appear to fix the glitch.
"Rebooting the phone fixes the problem temporarily, but Touch ID stopped working in a day or so," said a poster named schotzota. "Haven't found a permanent fix yet."
People who upgrade to iOS 9.1 can't restore their devices to a previous version, so anyone with the Touch ID issue will have to wait for a bug fix.
