Intel releases wireless Net suite

Intel has unveiled a suite of wireless networking products that it says allows companies and individuals to connect to the Internet and corporate networks five times faster than with previous wireless products. The chipmaker's technology, released at Comdex Fall 2001, links laptops and computers so people can share the same Internet connection, printers and other peripherals. The gear is based on the 802.11a standard, which reaches data-transfer rates of 54mbps (megabits per second), compared with previous technology based on the 802.11b wireless standard that has an 11mbps limit. The Intel Pro/Wireless 5000 LAN suite includes access points, desktop PC and notebook PC adapters, and set-up software. Intel's list prices for the new Access Point, CardBus Adapter for notebook PCs and LAN PCI Adapter for desktop PCs are $449, $179 and $229, respectively.
