Instagram hits 600 million users after year of rapid growth

The photo and video-sharing social network is now 600 million users strong, 100 million of whom joined up in just the past six months.

Here's a story for you: Instagram now has more than 600 million users, 100 million of whom joined up in just the past six months.

Instagram's "Stories" feature has yielded huge growth for the platform.

The rapid growth comes after a year that saw the debut of the Snapchat-like "Instagram Stories" feature that allows users to share a string of photos or videos that disappear after 24 hours. The feature has proven to be a hit for the Facebook-owned platform, which in October said that over 100 million stories were being viewed each day.

Instagram's newest feature: live video broadcasts that, like the stories, disappear as soon as you're finished broadcasting them. That feature rolled out to the users just this week.

"Thank you for being you," Instagram said in a blog post Thursday announcing the milestone. "We can't wait to see what you'll make next."
