Hewlett-Packard is considering an expansion of its research operations in Puerto Rico for pharmaceutical work and other tasks, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer and printer company said on Wednesday. HP and the Puerto Rican government signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the expansion, which could include a new branch of HP Labs, the company said.

HP currently employs about 2,000 in Puerto Rico for sales, service and manufacturing of inkjet cartridges and Superdome server circuit boards. Research areas of interest include technology to make it harder to counterfeit drugs and to make it easier to dispense medicine.
