Google is expanding its Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF) from India to the city-state of Singapore. Likeor , the Google-led initiative gets companies to offer discounts for products and services ahead of the retail-friendly Chinese New Year, on February 2 to 4.
The online sale, which started in India in 2012, will feature recognisable global apparel brands such as Adidas and Uniqlo alongside online travel services such as Agoda, Airbnb and Hotels.com. Deals will go online on February 2, with previews currently on show at the event's website.
One of the reasons Singapore was chosen as the second venue for GOSF, Google said, was due to research indicating that more than 49 percent of Singaporean Internet users use their phones for product information, with 12 percent of them completing purchases. This compares favorably to highly connected countries such as Japan, at 24 percent and 5 percent respectively.
In the 2014 Consumer Barometer Survey, a Google-backed study, numbers showed that Singaporein the world, at 85 percent, putting it above South Korea, Samsung and LG's home country, which checks in at 80 percent.
The same study, however, puts Singapore behind South Korea and Japan when it comes to online shopping -- 51 percent and 49 percent users from these two Asian countries make their purchases online compared with 37 percent in Singapore.
When asked if Google plans to bring this online festival to other markets, Google's country director, Joanna Flint, said it was "too early to tell," though the company would "love to do this everywhere."
Unlike in India, Google will not be making its own Nexus products, such as thetablet or smartphone, available in Singapore.
