Greetings from 34,000 feet! Even while hurtling through the sky, I'm on the lookout for cheap deals. (They're easier to spot from up here.) Isn't technology amazing?
USB 3.0 is finally starting to take hold, with at least one compatible port appearing on the latest laptops and desktops. Of course, that high-speed interface is no good if you don't have devices that can take advantage of it.
Like this one: for a limited time, and while supplies last, Dell Home has the 1-terabyte Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 external hard drive for $82.99 shipped. That's after applying coupon code QB4QHX$ZSJPQWQ at checkout.
That's not a fabulous price for a USB 2.0 drive of that size, but it's definitely compelling for a 3.0 drive. (It also supports FireWire 800.)
USB 3.0, of course, delivers super-ultra-speedy data transfers. If you're backing up, say, your entire PC, the operation might take 10-15 minutes instead of an hour. And if you're just copying over a handful of files, it should take almost no time at all.
The black, monolith-style FreeAgent is compatible with Windows and Mac systems. It features an illuminated capacity gauge (!) and preloaded software that makes automated, continuous backups of your data.
Best feature of all: Seagate's two-year warranty. (Hopefully you won't need it, of course, but I always like that extra peace of mind.)
Dell's deals and coupons tend to end without warning, and often the same day they appear, so if you're interested in this, I'd grab it quick.
Onward to Santa Monica!
Bonus deal: The Amazon Appstore continues to offer a daily freebie that includes, for some reason, a $1 MP3 credit. Today, for example, you can get PicShop Photo Editor for Android for free, plus a $1 credit for use at Amazon's MP3 store. That app normally sells for $4.99. But even if you don't need it, grab it for the free tune!
Bonus deal No. 2: Microsoft is once again offering Office Professional Plus 2010 for $9.95 to those users who have a "qualified" e-mail address -- meaning some companies, schools, and military branches. Enter your work e-mail address to see if you qualify.
