Gay portals cut staff before merger

PlanetOut and Gay.com's parent company, Online Partners, say they have laid off 29 employees as a result of the merger the two companies expect to close this month. The union was announced in November; the combined San Francisco-based company will be known as PlanetOut Partners. Spokesman Bryce Eberhart said the layoffs were necessary to eliminate redundancies and are part of the combined company's effort to become profitable this year. Eberthart said the head count was reduced to 97 employees from 126 employees and that the layoffs were across the board. The PlanetOut and Gay.com provide content and services for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
