Facebook is growing fast in India.

The world's second most-populous country is the social network's fastest-growing market as measured by daily active users, a Facebook executive told local media. Facebook's Indian audience grew at 22 percent, compared with 17 percent globally, said Mint, a business news publication in India.

"Our primary focus right now is for the next billion people to come online," Adam Mosseri, an executive in charge of product management, is quoted as saying. "India is obviously a huge part of that."

The company didn't immediate respond to a request for comment.

Facebook already has a huge audience, attracting 1.13 billion daily active users on average in June. The number swells to 1.71 billion active users when measured monthly.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has faced setbacks in his effort to expand in India. In February, Indian regulators cut off the company's Free Basics program, a free service that got users to Facebook and some partner websites. The decision was viewed as championing net neutrality.

Mosseri said India was a natural place for Facebook to grow.

"Roughly two-thirds of the US is on Facebook," he is quoted as saying. "In India, we are not sure if two-thirds of the population is even online."
