Broadband will soon be available onboard Boeing 737s and other aircraft, Boeing said Tuesday. Connexion, the company's high-speed Internet service, is the first broadband technology linking satellite systems and ground networks to meet Federal Aviation Administration requirements, according to Boeing.
The service will provide airline passengers high-speed Internet access, TV and e-mail without interfering with a plane's navigation or handling. The FCC has approved the service over U.S. territories and waters, and Boeing said it plans to begin service trials with European airline Lufthansa late this year. The paperwork needed for certification was e-mailed to the FAA via a satellite communication link from a test plane flying 35,000 feet above New Mexico, Boeing said.
