The erroneous election projections by broadcast and cable news operations and their Internet sites will be the subject of a House Commerce Committee hearing Feb. 14, according to Chairman Billy Tauzin, R-La.. He and several other House members expressed frustration at the incorrect projections by Voter News Service, a polling service owned by the major broadcast networks, and at state results being called before all of its polls were closed. Tauzin said that although the incorrect projections usually were in favor of Democrats in 2000, in 1980, Democrats in the western United States were harmed when Ronald Reagan was declared the victor over Jimmy Carter in the presidential race before the polls closed in the West. Several members said the time may be right for a uniform national polling period.
