To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, Perth Mint is releasing a limited-edition commemorative solid gold coin.

This coming November will mark the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, a mainstay of many of our childhoods. Initially conceived as an educational science program, today the time-travelling Gallifreyan is one of the most beloved television characters around the globe.

On 30 September, Perth Mint will be distributing a commemorative gold coin to celebrate the momentous occasion of his first arrival on the Earth's airwaves.

Made of 1 ounce of 99.99 per cent pure gold, the coin features the TARDIS, flying through space as seen in the television show's opening credits — similar to the commemorative silver coin released earlier this year. It was created by New Zealand Mint under license from BBC and will only be available through Perth Mint in Australia.

Each coin will come packaged with a wooden display case and numbered certificate of authenticity.

Only 250 of the coins will be released worldwide. You can pre-order one now from the Perth Mint website for AU$2995. It will also be available from the New Zealand Mint for NZ$3050.
