Disco Dog LED vest makes your pooch a party animal

Wearables go to the dogs with a colorful LED-studded, smartphone-controlled vest that sparkles in the dark and turns Fido into a four-legged disco ball.

A new Kickstarter project wants to light your dog up with the power of a million exploding suns. Technically, it's the power of 256 LEDs, but you get the idea. Disco Dog is a battery-operated vest that makes your pup look like he just stepped out of Studio 54 and went for a walk with John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever."

A smartphone app controls the vest. You can choose from preset patterns like sparkle, firefly, gradient or stripe, or set a custom scrolling message. For a custom message, you might consider "Squirrel!" or "Walkies!" The effect is pretty dramatic, especially at night. It looks a bit like walking a four-legged disco ball.

One of the vest's more intriguing features is called "Lost Dog Mode." This activates when your pup wanders off and the Bluetooth connection is lost. It triggers a flashing message telling everyone "Lost dog." It should make for a pretty good Craigslist found-dog ad: "Found dachshund wearing unusual party vest. Call to describe."

The vest is currently in its beta phase with a working prototype already in existence. The campaign aims to raise $15,000 to refine the design and app and go into small-scale production. So far, it has attracted nearly $4,000 in funding with 27 days left to go.

Party New York, the creative lab behind Disco Dog, plans to offer the vest in small, medium and large sizes. The small size is going for a $300 (about £200, AU$390) pledge, while the large is $400 (about £270, AU$520). Not everyone will be willing to pay the price of an Apple Watch for a dog wearable, but it will definitely make your pup the light-up life of the party.
