Curved glass iPad 3 incoming?

Apple is planning curved glass touchscreen devices next year, according to a report. Could that mean a curved iPad 3 is on the way?

If you were wondering what Apple was going to do next, we may have an answer for you. DigiTimes reports Apple and others are planning curved glass for touchscreens for devices next year.

Lots of companies are investing in new manufacturing techniques that'll mean curvaceous touchscreens on upcoming devices, according to the report. Look out, your gadgets are about to take on some new curves.

DigiTimes attributes the comments to sources in the glass industry, saying Apple and its competitors are all getting in on the curved-glass act. A report in May also said Apple had bought between 200 and 300 glass-cutting machines to help produce curved touchscreens.

There hasn't been any mention of curved glass on the iPhone 5 though, and seeing as it's due to be announced next week, we can only assume the touchscreen will be similar to the iPhone 4's. The iPad 3, due next year, however, could be a different case altogether.

Some gadgets already use curved glass, such as the Google Nexus S by Samsung, whose screen is meant to fit your face better to make calls more comfortable. The fifth-generation iPod nano also had a curved glass screen.

Apple's planned second headquarters in Cupertino, California, will be full of curved glass, if former CEO Steve Jobs is to be believed. He was quoted as saying, "There's not a straight piece of glass in this building -- it's all curved."

The iPad 3 isn't due until next year, and the screen is expected to be one of the main changes, especially in the face of such competition as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, with its fancy AMOLED business.
