In a bid to link PCs and home appliances for home control, Compaq Computer has invested in the Intellon Corporation for use of its technology the companies claim will connect PCs and home applicances.
Compaq/Intellon technology will enable PCs to control consumer products like televisions, refrigerators, and stoves. According to Intellon officials, users will also be able to adjust temperature, lights, and power usage from their PCs.
Intellon officials say the wiring system necessary to support "intelligent houses" currently adds $15,000 to $30,000 to the cost of a new home. Compaq declined to give pricing details of its future plans.
