The Commerce Department is evaluating whether Internet blocking and filtering technology is adequate for school systems' needs and whether Internet safety policies for children are effective. The agency's National Telecommunications and Information Administration was directed by the Children's Internet Protection Act of 2000 to study the issue, and the work continues even though other parts of the law were. The NTIA is supposed to make recommendations to Congress on those topics and on how to foster development of new technologies that would meet schools' needs.
