CNET News.com wins online news awards

News.com takes home three Online Journalism Awards, handed out by the Online News Association and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

CNET News.com has won three Online Journalism Awards, handed out Friday by the Online News Association and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

Except for WashingtonPost.com, News.com was the only multiple-award winner of the online awards. Other winners included CNN.com, ChicagoTribune.com, Slate.com and MSNBC.com.

News.com won awards for General Excellence in Online Journalism, more than 200,000 visitors; Breaking News, independent, for Trouble@Home, the end of the Excite broadband service; and Enterprise Journalism, independent, for Online Banking Vulnerable to Hackers, a look at the loopholes in online banking.

The contest, which honors excellence in Internet journalism, received 728 entries from 10 countries.

"The winners and finalists this year represent the very best of online journalism," said Sreenath Sreenivasan, administrator of the awards and a professor of new media at the school. "These awards set high standards to which all who work in new media can aspire."

The Online Journalism Awards are among several major journalism awards administered by Columbia, including the Pulitzer Prizes, the National Magazine Awards and the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards for broadcast journalism.
