Any American Idol fan can tell you that each of the show's five winners hailed from the South. Is it just a coincidence, or could it be that southerners just have better voices? In an effort to squeeze even more publicity out of Cingular's relationship with the popular reality show, the NPD Group is suggesting that the Atlanta-based carrier's large southern customer base may be a factor. According to figures put out by the company, 46 percent of Cingular's 43 million subscribers live south of the Mason-Dixon Line. What's more, southerners are twice as likely to use text messaging (an American Idol voting method) than Cingular customers in other regions of the country.
