Build a firewall behind your firewall

To keep intranets safe from data thieves inside their own companies, Trusted Information Systems is proposing that businesses install firewalls behind their firewalls.

The company will next week announce Gauntlet Intranet Firewall, a companion product to its Gauntlet Internet Firewall. The new intranet software, which will sell for $7,500, will protect sub-networks, or selected groups of users on a network, on a TCP/IP LAN by shutting out all but authorized users from accessing information stored on a given Web server.

The original Gauntlet Internet Firewall, which sells separately for $11,000, is designed to keep unauthorized users from breaking and entering from the Internet to the LAN. The company said the intranet firewall has all of the same features as its older Internet sibling, including encryption, but is designed to be managed from the Gauntlet Internet Firewall management console.

The intranet firewall could be used, for example, to protect a company's accounting department so that nosy employees couldn't find out how much their neighbors earn, while letting the accounting employees remain linked to the corporate-wide intranet. Many companies that want this kind of protection are now setting up and maintaining completely separate networks, said Fred Ovolio, TIS vice president of marketing.

TIS will also unveil next week the $10,000 Gauntlet Internet Extender, a firewall for remote branch offices, and Gauntlet Net Extender, a $100 program for Windows 3.1 and 95 that lets telecommuters and mobile PC users encrypt their communication across the Internet.

All of the products are set to ship in early June. The firewalls will run on a variety of Unix flavors, including BSDI Unix, HP-UX, SunOS, IRXI, and Solaris.
