Boating.com sets sail

The site for all things nautical marries content, community, and commerce.

Boating.com, an e-commerce and content site that aims to be the yellow and white pages of the boating industry, is now afloat.

It is another example of the boom in sites that marry information with e-commerce. Boating.com features daily boating news, weather forecasts, tide reports, and free classified ads for people looking to sell or buy a boat. An online store is coming this summer, according to the Web site. The site also includes a search engine and listing service for fishing and boating businesses.

"The boating industry is ripe for revolution of online shopping and we are positioned to become the 'in the water' version of Amazon.com" said the site's co-founder and president Tom King, who also is CompuTalk's radio show host. "Plus, we own the non-trademarkable domain names to over 60 of North America's boat shows and will be serving out their show sites from within Boating.com."

The information comes from Boating Life magazine, the Weather Channel, the National Data Buoy Center, and Fishing.com, among others.

Boating.com was launched by ClassicSites.com, led by King. ClassicSites.com owns more than 300 domain names.
