AT&T, HP team for high-speed data

Officials from the two companies said they will develop products that give more technical control to network operators.

AT&T and Hewlett-Packard have signed a deal to jointly develop high-speed data services using AT&T phone equipment and HP's computer hardware. The plan is to develop high-speed data services for telephone networks and cable TV systems.

Officials from the two companies said they will develop products that give more technical control to network operators. This would allow users to get info more quickly from a wider variety of low-cost access devices, analysts said.

Planning for the agreement between the two companies began about six months ago. Development plans also include a common software infrastructure that will allow network operators to set up compatible systems.
