Business-to-business software maker Ariba appointed former J.D. Edwards executive Michael Schmitt to lead the company's marketing efforts. Taking on the newly created role of chief marketing officer at Mountain View, Calif.-based Ariba, Schmitt will oversee strategic direction and positioning, including corporate strategy, global marketing and technology alliances. Ariba develops software that links companies with their suppliers and partners over the Internet. Schmitt, who most recently led sales and marketing at business software maker J.D. Edwards, begins at Ariba immediately and will report directly to Ariba COO Larry Mueller.
Schmitt left J.D. Edwards amid tough times. The struggling software maker recently warned of slower-than-expected sales growth for its first quarter and also said it expects to report a first-quarter loss. J.D. Edwards, which has also set its eyes on the lucrative business-to-business software market, has recently suffered from execution problems, which are having a negative affect on its financials.
