Apple: Open-source gang has Rendezvous

Apple Computer said Wednesday that it has released its Rendezvous networking technology into the open-source community, following through on its earlier promise to do so. The technology allows networked devices, such as computers and printers, to discover each other and broadcast what services are available.

Apple says that Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Philips, Sybase, World Book and Xerox are all working on adding the technology to various products, but the company hopes even more companies will do so now that the source code is available from the company's Web site. In addition, the company released an updated version of Darwin, the open-source core within Apple's Mac OS X operating system.
