Amazon's voice assistant is getting a face (The 3:59, Ep. 218)

Also on the podcast, we talk about how expensive ransomware has gotten and Facebook Live's gruesome problems.

Expect a facelift for the Amazon Echo soon.

The retail giant has been tinkering with variations of its voice assistant, like the Echo Look, which it introduced on Wednesday. Amazon will likely reveal a new Echo with a built-in screen in May, a source familiar with the company told CNET.

We chat about Amazon's race to introduce more Echo devices as Google ramps up efforts with its own voice assistant, and what a screen could mean for the home device.

Also on the podcast, we take a look at cybersecurity reports and growing ransomware trends. Over the last year, the average price to free your computer has tripled from $294 to more than $1,000. We also take a look at Facebook's gruesome issue, as it deals with murders on its live streaming platform.

The 3:59 gives you bite-size news and analysis about the top stories of the day, brought to you by the CNET News team in New York and producer Bryan VanGelder.
