Mark Hansen, chairman and chief executive of Fleming Companies, a distributor and retailer of food and drugs, joined Amazon.com's board of directors on Thursday. Hansen is the sixth member of Amazon's board, filling a newly created position. Amazon spokesman Bill Curry declined to say whether the company would add more members to its board.
Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos told shareholders in May that the company would consider expanding its board. Shareholders and outside groups had previously criticized Amazon's board for its small size and its lack of retail experience and independence from Bezos. Hansen, whose company posted $15 billion in revenue last year, will add retail and operational experience to Amazon's board, Curry said.
