To date, Pentium Pro systems have been brought out only as workstations because of problems in server environments with the first version of the Pentium Pro 82450 chipset.
ALR will use the newest "B" version of the chipset--which is designed to fix the problems--for its servers, said David Sorenson, product manager for Advanced Server Systems at ALR.
"We've just been waiting for the [new version of the chipset] from Intel. We've been ready to go with our board designs for some time," Sorenson said.
Due to ship in mid-April, the "ALR Revolution Quad6" will support up to four 166-MHz Intel Pentium Pro processors with a 512-kilobyte integrated level-2 cache memory. The standard configuration, priced at $14,995, includes a single Pentium Pro 166-MHz processors with 512K of cache, 64MB of ECC (error checking and correcting) RAM expandable to 2GB, a PCI graphics adapter, and a dual PCI bus and EISA bus. A quad (four-processor) system is priced at around $24,000, said ALR. The Quad6 offers other advanced features such as a fast memory architecture that increases the amount of data transferred in a single memory seek.
In May of this year, ALR will bring out models with a 200-MHz Pentium Pro processor--also with 512K of cache. Intel sells two versions of its Pentium Pro processor: the less-expensive version with 256K of integrated cache and a high-end server-centric version with 512K of integrated cache. The increased cache offers better performance in server environments.
Operating systems that can scale up and take advantage of the quad design include Windows NT, NetWare, and Unix, said ALR.
