Acer A500 tablet gets Best Buy preorders now, available soon

Acer announces price and availability of its Iconia A500 Tab.

The Acer Iconia Tab A500 is only the second Honeycomb-based tablet. The first was the Motorola Xoom. Acer

When I last saw the Acer Iconia A500 Tab back in January at CES 2011, there was very little information available about the tablet. Then, Acer only showed the tablet with a blank screen. Even the screenshots didn't include screenshots.

What a difference three months makes.

On Friday Acer announced that its Iconia Tab A500 is now available for preorder exclusively at BestBuy.com. And as you'll see from the slideshow below, there are now plenty of screenshots in the screenshots.

Acer also confirms that the A500 may be preordered in brick and mortar Best Buy stores beginning April 14. The tablet with Wi-Fi, will be available in stores and online beginning April 24 with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $449.99.

The 10.1-inch Acer Iconia Tab A500 will be only the second tablet, yet released, running Android 3.0 or Honeycomb. The Acer also includes a dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 250 processor, integrated GeForce graphics, 1GB of RAM, forward- and rear-facing cameras, and a 1,280x800-pixel TFT WXGA display with an 80-degree wide viewing angle. An ambient light sensor and accelerometer round out the main features.

The new tablet comes with an integrated 16GB of flash storage and can support a larger storage capacity of 32GB, which is planned for future models. The microSD card reader supports up to 32GB cards.

This all comes in an aluminum-based design that weighs 1.69 pounds; it measures 10.24 inches wide by 6.97 deep by 0.52 inch thick.

The 16:10 aspect ratio display includes support for 720p video playback and can output 1080p video via its built-in HDMI port.

Gaming on tablets is one of the category's biggest draws and isn't content to sleep on this fact as it includes full versions of both Need for Speed: Shift and Let's Golf.

The tablet also comes preinstalled with Acer LumiRead and Google Books apps for all your e-reading needs. For digital magazine reading, Acer is nice enough to preinstall Zinio on each A500.

The A500 also includes support for clear.fi, Acer's media-sharing software.

Finally, the tablet includes two 3260 mAh lithium polymer batteries, which, according to Acer, "provide up to 8 hours of playback for casual games, 8 hours of HD video playback, and 10 hours of Wi-Fi Internet browsing".

Accessories available at launch:

  • Full-size Bluetooth keyboard. MSRP: $69.99.
  • Charging dock with IR remote and connection for an external speaker or headphone. MSRP:$79.99.
  • Protective case. MSRP: $39.99.
  • The Americas power adapter. MSRP: $29.99.

We'll have more information on the Acer Iconia Tab A500 soon, including a full review when it launches.
