Photos of thenot good enough for you? NBC's "Today" show headed to Kunming, a city in the southwest of the country, that houses just such a store to capture it on film.
In the video, which was picked up by Cult of Mac, NBC reporter Adrienne Mong heads inside to scope out the trimmings on the Kunming store--the same one that made headlines last week after being profiled by a blogger with the handle BirdAbroad.
Inside, visitors poke at iPads, iPhones, and Apple notebook computers atop wooden tables while staffers stock a dizzying array of accessories on nearby walls. As Mong notes, the surroundings are "convincing," right down to the clear acrylic signage and gadget stands.
Store employees, donning blue T-shirts with the Apple logo and the company's signature name tag lanyard stand nearby, with one telling Mong she believes the media have "distorted the facts" about the operation.
Following last week's interest over the fake shops, Reuters reported that Chinese authorities were launching inspections to look into whether any laws were being broken.
That included finding out whether the shops were carrying the proper permits and licenses to sell, as well as if the gear was real, and where it was coming from. As a result of that effort, two so-called "Apple Stores", with officials finding that all five stores in the area were selling Apple-made hardware that had been purchased from third-party authorized resellers.
Apple is quickly approaching 330 stores worldwide, 4 of which are currently in China, including its flagship store in Beijing that features an above-ground glass cylinder with the store residing underneath. During the company'scall, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook noted that China was "key" to the company's results, with sales in Greater China up six times from the same period last year.
