Every day I read several stories about mobile manufacturers struggling under the weight of the global recession and while it saddens me to hear that some may collapse, I'm not sure it's necessarily a bad thing for the industry.
For too long, too may companies in the mobile industry have grown rich off the back of mediocre products and services -- but that's quickly coming to an end. In a market where innovation means survival, I think that we may see the best products and deals yet.
INQ, for example, recently announced a relatively inexpensive, which is available on an affordable tariff from 3 with unlimited Internet access. It's perfect for Facebook junkies who don't need all the other stuff you get on smart phones. This is the kind of new and affordable product that will drive the industry forward.
Networks and manufacturers won't be able to get away with all the old tricks -- they need to deliver good products with realistic price tags, and that means a better deal for us. The buck definitely stops here.
