WWDC 2009 keynote wrap-up

Tech Industry
>> Brian Tong: What's up guys? Brian Tong here with CNET TV at the end of the keynote at WWDC 2009. Phil Schiller just got off stage and like you would think, it was everything iPhone. This time it's going to be called the iPhone 3GS. >> The fastest most powerful iPhone yet. [ Applause ] >> Brian Tong: It's going to perform about twice as fast with internet browsing. It will support AT&T's new 7 point 2 megabytes per second network speed. This will feature the touted 3 megapixel camera. It will be able to take photos a lot better but it has this cool touch focus interface where you touch on an item, the camera and the software knows where to focus so they had a house in the background and a flower in the foreground that they used as an example. Also you're going to be able to get video capture. Everyone's been waiting for this, but the real slick part about this is the fact that you can actually trim and edit your video clips and then upload them to You Tube, MobileMe or other services. Also some other features that were [inaudible] was voice control so you can actually talk by holding down the home button to your iPhone or iPod Touch. It will actually then enable you to control your music collection or control it to call people. That was some really cool stuff. You're also going to get a digital compass to help guide you where you need to be. Let's talk about the hardware specs. It's going to be coming in at 32 gigs at the high end at 299: a 16 gig model for 199. And the iPhone 3G will still be available for 99 dollars and that's available today at that price. Now enough about the iPhone hardware. We also heard a few things about the new iPhone 3 point 0 software that we didn't really know about. Tethering will be available in 3 point 0 but the trick is that they didn't announce that AT&T was going to support it. You kind of heard a groan through the whole audience. >> In 42 countries around the world, they will support this at the launch of iPhone OS 3 0 and more will be rolling out later. [ Laughter ] >> Brian Tong: Another thing everyone has been waiting for are GPS maps. TomTom came out to actually demo their GPS application. So for all of you that have been waiting turn-by-turn is actually coming to the iPhone. They said it would be available sometime in the summer. And one of the cool features that had everyone buzzing was Find My iPhone. So if you're a MobileMe user, it is an account that you have to subscribe to. You can go to the web, find your iPhone if you lost it, and it sends out a noise signal. >> [Beeping] This alert sound plays whether or not you left it in silent mode. [ Applause ] >> Brian Tong: And also you have the ability to remote wipe it so all that data that's really important can just disappear and whoever has that phone won't be able to get access to it. We also got the first look of Mac OS 10 Snow Leopard. It's going to be available sometime in September. And following that affordability theme, the OS is going to be sold for Leopard users for 29 bucks. [ Applause ] We still got a little sneak peak at the dock expose feature to help you manage and move content through the apps really easily as well as a sneak peak at QuickTime and its new look. And yes there is still more hardware announcements. The entire MacBook Pro line was totally revamped. They have now added the 13 inch into the mix. They all feature Apple's new built in batter. That was implemented into the 17 inch which will give you about 40 percent more life. The screens have been improved as well. The 13 inch model will start entry level at 1199. That's about 300 dollars less than the previous version. The 15 inch will start at 1699 and the 17 inch model will start at 2499. And yes, something that I always was complaining about is they brought FireWire 800 back to the 13 inch MacBook Pro. All of these new MacBook Pros are available today, so if you've been waiting on the fence no one really saw this coming in the rumor mills. Go to the store and get it. But overall the big announcements here, iPhone 3GS, new iPhone 3 point 0 software updates and really Apple's line is making itself a lot more affordable for everyone. I'm Brian Tong with CNET TV. Make sure you check out all the other videos and coverage that we have here going on at WWDC 2009.
