First Look: Western Digital My Passport Studio

About the same size as a real passport, just thicker, the WD My Passport Studio boasts a very nice design, nifty capacity gauge, and comes with a sleek velure purse that's well-suited for frequent travelers.

^M00:00:00 [ Music ] ^M00:00:02 >> [Background music] Hello, this is Dong Ngo CNET.com and today we check out My Passport. No, not this one even though it's mine it sure is interesting. About the same size as my actual passport, three times thicker and not quite as interesting. This is the only My Passport Studio external hard drive from Western Digital. This is a very nice external hard drive with sleek aluminum casing. The drive features dual interfaces, USB [inaudible] and FireWire 400. It comes with cable for both connections. Each of these cables works both as data and power connection and the drive doesn't come with a separate power adapter. It doesn't even have a power port for that matter. On the sides here the My Passport has a smart capacity gauge that roughly details how much storage space has been used. And very roughly because there is only four levels of indication. This is a 320 gigabyte hard drive, so each of these LED's on the gauge represents 80 gigabyte. For example, we have a one being lit here and that means 80 gigabyte or less of the drives storage space has been occupied by data. The gauge has also another nifty function, when not in use you can slide to cover the ports to protect them from dust. The My Passport Studio is preformatted for OS10. So if you are a Mac user, just plug it in and it works. The drive is light and feels very solid. It also comes with a soft velour purse that has a string here. >>You can buy it now for about $195.00, which translates into about $26.00 per gigabyte. A very good deal in considering its size, features and of course, the nice the purse. Again, my name is Dong Ngo this has been the first look at My Passport Studio from Western Digital [Background music]
