Tech Minute: Travel tips from social media

1:05 /

TripAdvisor and Yelp are great resources to help plan a vacation. But you might not always trust strangers' reviews. In this Tech Minute, CNET's Kara Tsuboi reports on websites and apps that tap into your social circle to get the best travel tips from friends.

[MUSIC] After you've booked your airfare and secured your hotel, import your itinerary into GONNAGO, a free app for iPhone and Android users. Then push out all or some of the details to Facebook friends and Twitter followers to see if there's any overlap with their travel. Create circles of friends within the app to collect recommendations for places to visit, and make plans to meet up along the way. Trippy is a website that aims to provide reviews and recommendations in a casual, social way. Create a profile, ask a travel question, or answer someone else's. The social part comes in when you push those question and answers to your greater social network. You can also begin following users of Trippy if you find that you like their style and taste, creating a social network all of its own. And finally, if you just want to passively collect vacation recommendations from friends, you can now share your traveling to status on Facebook. Post a photo, ask for tips, and let the comments and likes roll in. In San Francisco, I'm Carasi Boyd, CNET.com for CBS News. [MUSIC]
