Culture
On today's show Amazon has some cool new robots helping fulfill your orders this holiday season. A mega mobile gaming truck is up for sale on eBay and I want it and you can't have it. [LAUGH] And some Swiss robots are making some really awesome 8-bit light art. I wanna see that. Yeah it's gonna be awesome. Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Greetings citizens of the internet. Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the universe. I am your host Ashley Esqueda, joining me as always punching the sky on a Monday, Khail Anonymous.>> Hey, how's it going? It's great.>> Yeah It's December. Really long weekend. Super long weekend. Yeah, I didn't go to Disneyland but you did. And producer Logan did. Yeah, thanks a lot. I've got my evil selfie shirt on. Thanks for inviting me. Me. Sorry, it's just you know? It's really hard to take you places. It's true. Not a lot- He cries when he's in line. It's just putting him in the stroller. It's a nightmare. It's like horrible. Just buy me a candy. We're good to go. It, it's the worst. So it, it's December 1st and I'm pretty excited because that means the holidays is here which goes right into our first story. So let's hit the headlines. [MUSIC] So we all know that Amazon delivers stuff and, and their chain of like, delivery is crazy good. We all know this. Yeah, today I was gonna order something and it's like, if you order within the next hour, you get it today. No. Yeah, it'll say like, you'll get it today by 9 p.m., which is. Madness. Well Amazon just unveiled their next gen 8th generation fulfilment centers. These are their warehouses. So their fulfilment centers are the place where all your stuff comes from. So when you order things on Amazon. So these are the robots. Here they are. They're little robots and they're helping out in there. They're adorable. If you're not watching they're super adorable. They're super adorable. They look almost like a Roomba. Yeah. Except a Roomba that brings you stuff. This is a company called Kiva Systems that Amazon actually acquired a couple of years ago. They acquired them in 2012, it's a robotics company. They can move really tall stacks of people's stuff around the warehouse, which is kind of awesome. Is what you're seeing right now. They're you see this one's gonna move out and it's got a whole rack full of products. There's some, there's like a pan or something in there, some kitchen product. [LAUGH] So there are ten of these centers around the U.S. right now. Ten major cities I'm assuming. Well not necessarily. Actually a lot of times these [UNKNOWN] centers are in suburbs of major cities. Oh afford, affordable Space purch, well space. I mean it's like they gotta have these huge you know, hundred thousand foot warehouse, I mean hundred thousand square foot warehouse. It's crazy. So they but, but they're her and they're eighth gen. These are their eight generation fulfilment center. They also have this other thing call which i really like. It this arm call the robosto. We're watching the robots kinda run around. But the the robosto arm is this giant yellow arm. That is like in the middle of the warehouse. And it pulls out large like taped up. You know how they put like a plastic sort of wrap on multiple boxes. Oh there it is. There it is. Yeah here you go. So it can pull out just a chunk of Oh wow. People's products and bring them down. And there's only one of those in there or is there multiple. Look at this place. Gee. Yeah. See these, these are the kinds of facilities. This is the type of space that they need at Amazon to make sure all your stuff gets to you. It's really amazing to kinda see the insides of these places and realize like my, S, micro SD card came from there and like Yeah. no body lost it. It came on time. It's like really I'm always appreciative after seeing exactly how they go through and process all of thee things. You really don't. Think often a lot about how The process. The process of how your stuff gets to you. So. Especially with the speed that they do it and the robots. That's, that is basically I sent this to you. It's so efficient. It's food for thought when you're buying stuff on Cyber Monday. Yeah, and especially just even for the holidays. Like everybody buys stuff and you know you do feel like people get obviously very upset when their packages don't come on time because these are gifts for our friends and family and loved ones. But you also have to remember like, this is a huge process for a lot of these companies to transmit and even just get everything. How, how do things just not end up in the wrong boxes all time?>>Oh my God. Yeah.>>How do they not get shipped to the right people? I mean, it's really amazing and a testament to how great shipping has kind of become. Even though, obviously, we've all had issues with.>>Yep.>>Like terrible shipping.>>Mm-hm.>>Across all carriers like [LAUGH] there's nobody>> [LAUGH] In particular. [UNKNOWN] always have bad experiences but. It's really amazing that it doesn't happen more often. Right. You can watch something like that it's just, how do they not just lose my little frustration free packaged micro SD card. You can get it on time. Yeah. No, it always comes next day and now they want to do drones so let's do Yeah, who knows how drones might work with that. But I guess 15,000 of these robots are at Amazon. [CROSSTALK] 15,000 feet, at each one, or spread out all over? No, no, no. I think it's, yeah, spread all over. So it's probably about 1500 at least, of the ten. I'll be very curious to find out the robot to human ratio in each of those. Well there's a lot of people that get hired for the holidays. I think I saw an article saying that they were gonna hire, you know, thousands of new people to help. Fulfill at Amazon. A thousand new people to help orders and a lot of those people actually end up getting hired full time. Oh, that's cool. It's temporary and then a lot of people end up, you know, rolling out into a full time job. Do your job right. We'll see. Get a full time job, full medical, full dental. All right so this story You said I can't have it but I think I might. You can't have it. I'm gonna have it. We'll work something out. This is a little tiny story that kind of like. Just, you know, if you're a huge gamer, and you like being on the move, this is called a Charlie Pass. Now basically the Charlie Pass is a dealer- eBay seller A seller who is selling a giant. Gaming trailer that has 25 consoles in it. And it's a mobile gaming trailer- Look at this thing. You can play the video games. They each have their own monitor. Cause they've got. They, they have their own monitor. Right, so here's the breakdown. Wow. 24 people can fit in it, it has 25 Xbox 360 consoles. Sorry not next gen. 25. It has 24 I'm sorry. It has 25, 24 inch 1080p monitor. Okay so we can game in high def. Yeah you can game in high def. And then they, it has turtle beach headsets and triton headsets. So legitimate headsets. Good headsets. Yeah good headsets. Okay. Not just [UNKNOWN] stuff you can get at Best Buy for ten bucks. No and so all of this. is available for 49 thousand doll, 49 thousand, 49 thousand dollars. Sorry, I wanted to make sure you heard that. It comes with the truck though, right? It comes with the truck. Yeah, a 2006. Ford F-250 four door turbo diesel truck. Okay- [CROSSTALK] They said it's worth the truck's worth $18,000. Okay, so that's, you know, you're adding value there. Okay, so that's the starting bid. But what if I wanted to just say, you know what? I'm just gonna buy it right now. Obviously, Kell and I, clearly rich billionaires. Yeah. Secret rich billionaires of course. Right, right. Not so secret anymore but okay, I'm ready I just want to buy it now, I'm gonna click on the button. How much? Well that's, I only got 49,000. Half the price. What is that? There's a buy it now. What is the buy it now? 79,000 dollars. Wait, what, oh, the beginning bid was, yeah. Opening bid is 49 grand. Yeah, it's 79,000 dollars, right out the gate. Does anybody have 80,000 they can just loan us? [CROSSTALK] Something else to to think about is that there's 1000 games in the Xbox 360 library that they're offering. Well that's pretty fun but here's the thing like 1000 games. That's pretty good. Okay so let's say I buy this. I pay let's say I pay 80,000. Let's say I just can't wait. I gotta just buy this. Truck and trailer. Mm-hm. So up to 80 grand. Then I gotta upgrade to XBox One. And I gotta Yeah. buy all the games for that. LIke [CROSSTALK] They were saying it was gonna cost 10 K to upgrade it to the XBox One. See that's too, that's, that's just an extra value, that it's an extra cost that I don't know that I can take. but if I'm a [CROSSTALK] billionaire. [UNKNOWN] is trying to tell you he, you should rent it out for birthday parties. And. Mark And the Age of Empires and stuff like that. And special producer Mark I'm gonna say, Charlie Pap, don't tell me what to do. All right. I wanna go across co, country and play like a Fourza on the way. Yeah, that would be amazing. That'd be amazing. So, there you go. That actually brings us to our Hashtag of the Day. Ooh, all right. Which I really, I like this one. I think you guys are gonna come up with some really great, wacky ideas. TDtrailer is the hashtag of the day, and we wanna know if you could have a trailer filled with one thing only to entertain you for the rest of your life, what would it be? To entertain you for the rest of your life? Yeah. Okay, what do you got? For me I think it would be I think it would be, I, well, it'd be a console, but I don't know if I could pick. Maybe like a Playstation 2. Okay. 'Cuz you have to do right now. You can't do on like the potential so the PS4. Oh, right. You may get like 10 games that are gonna be really, really good but that's really all you have. Does it have to be a game? No just entertain you. Okay. You could have a trai, [UNKNOWN] You could have a trailer. I was gonna say you could have a trailer full. Of kittens. Yeah of kitties. Of yeah. Of of Pizza. Can I have a pool in there? Well that would be only thing. But build with like a different, like a different substance. So like, maybe jello [CROSSTALK] Jello. Yeah, yeah, fill it up with jello and then walk into it. That's the only entertainment Kills can [CROSSTALK] for the rest of his life. [LAUGH] Walking around [CROSSTALK] trailer full of gross jello. So. That's just going to get more disgusting over time. Yeah, let us know. Tell us. What you would fill your trailer with and, and, how you would have a good time with and, Yeah. And how much you'd pay for it. Keep it clean folks. Keep it clean. I, I shouldn't have to tell you but I just, you know, some of you out there might have some more adult proclivities, but we won't read them out loud on the show. We might enjoy them, though. We might laugh. We will probably laugh. We will definitely laugh. I am going to think about that for awhile while you do the next story. Let me tell you about these bar code paintings these are pretty cool. These are little robots that can make these awesome 8 bit paintings out of long exposure photography. So like light paintings. Okay. Which is really neat. So here they are these little robots. They are called. Thymios and this is from Switzerland. This is a company called Thymio, Thymio Robots. And so here is the design so you can see they showed them really quickly and then they're going to do this long exposure photography. These robots are running on this these strips of paper. Okay, so these [UNKNOWN] paper has black and white gradients on it and the gradients let the robot correct course quicker and continuously. So like very very quickly will it do that. And that as opposed to getting way off track and then having to come back to a solid black line. So there there's another light sensor underneath it that reads a bar code next to the gradient line that tells the robot what color it should be. Okay. And when to turn off and stuff? yeah. And so the robot moves along the line and changes color based on commands. And so here you go you can see some of the this is light this is long exposure so you can see it's light art. So it's a Mario. Created by a robot It's a me It's mario. So that's how Let's a go!>> the light paintings made and it's really really cool because all of the software and templates for these tracks and you know for these designs. Are all available for download for free. So [UNKNOWN] like Oh. Apparently and I didn't know this, this, these little robots are actually really popular in Switzerland. I was just about to ask. Yeah. So how do you get one of these robots and like They're 125 bucks for a robot. Okay. And they apparently have a very deep. Continually developing communities. Like so they're always, people are always developing for these robots. Like they're relatively inexpensive in terms of like programming your own robot and apparently very popular with like kids. Well like these are. Good like starter robots have kids like program little like programs and stuff for these robots. That's fantastic. It's really neat. I, I kinda wanna know whatever what else what anybody else has done but. And they're well, well the price of them is really interesting because they're designed by EPFL in Switzerland and so they don't actually make. Money. Like they don't make a lot of money off of them. Really the point is, is to get them out there to help educate. Like which is really neat. I really, very, noble cause. [APPLAUSE] But I mean I still have to pay for you know? Obviously like the set, the robots production and everything. So there is a price tag attached to it. But it's really neat that they're, they're not, you know? This major corporation that's like. Squeezing every dime of profit out of these robots. Give us money for robots. You know, they just want people to learn and then in the process maybe, you know, make enough money to make another, you know, level of robot or whatever in future. So it's pretty neat. Well that's cool. I'm gonna have to check out what other things this robot does. Really, really neat. It's called, like I said it's called Simeo. T-H-Y-M-I-L, so if you want to check that out you can. Thymil yeah. If anybody has one, let us know. There's so much to do with it, I don't know. Yeah, if you have one. Yeah, send us a video of like other stuff that you do. Other stuff yeah. But for right now we're gonna take a quick 30 second break. We'll be right back with a Baccater hacket set that feels like it was literally tailor made for Khalil. Ooh. And then we also of course have your user feedback from not only one but two shows last week, and and of course our phonetographer for the day. So don't click away, Tomorrow Daily. [MUSIC] Welcome back, welcome back to the show. Khail, I, you seem really excited [CROSSTALK] No, because you know me well enough to know what I like and, and I'm, I get excited, I'm excited. So let's hear it, let's hear it. So to hear that there is a Kickstarter tailor-made for you, has to be really exciting? Oh, of course. So let's just jump right in to, Back It or Hack IT. Guys, there is a pizza bed. Ooh! Bed? It exists. it exists. It's a pizza bed. So long, world. [LAUGH] Khail is like, I'm out. All right. So, what is this? Okay so this is a Kickstart. It's technically, it's a house decoration. It's for your, it's a bed spread. But there it is. It's a pizza bed right there. Why do they have to Kickstart it? Why don't they just make this? Well I think because you've gotta, you have to digitally print the fabric, which can be expensive. Yeah. So one of the things that I'm always one of the Etsy sites that I really like is actually, just to go off on a slight tangent is. This really cool clothing maker, who takes NASA and like high res NASA images because they're public use. Yeah. And she sends them off to a fabric printer and digitally gets print of like, nebulas, and like all kinds of crazy stuff- That's fantastic, yeah. that we've taken high def photography for in space and then makes like infinity scarves and dresses and things from those prints. Good Christmas gift, wink. Really, really cool. So, so this, I would imagine, is in the same vein. So let's go back and let's check this out. So here is the pizza bed, on, on the website. So here's the, the fitted mattress is marinara sauce. [LAUGH] No way. Yeah, yeah, of course. It's a real pizza. So it's it's the greatest thing ever. So they, they have this little diagram, so they have a marinara sauce fitted sheet. Oh my God. The sheets, and then of course you have to have the crust, the crust is your pillow. The pillow's the crust. And then the duvet cover is pizza, your cheese and pepperoni topping. So you're kind of a topping a little bit on this- You are. Yeah, it's a little bit of, you're the human topping inside the pizza. Under the cheese though. So I guess you'd be some kind of like. I don't know. Like an onion. You know I already have troubles getting trouble getting out of bed, so. And now it's a- Now you'll never leave. Okay. So give me the details. Give me the details of this pizza order. Okay. So here's the price. If you want the actual. It comes in a pizza box. Oh, yeah, yeah, it comes in a pizza box. The original pizza bed. See, that's part of the kick starter. They gotta get that, okay. So if you want the full set the early backer twin pizza bed, so just for a twin size bed is 100 bucks. 'Kay? That's not bad. Yeah. If you want a full, or queen-sized pizza bed, it's 125 bucks. Okay. That's early, early backer. If you want a king-sized bed, early backer is 150. Those are really good prices for- Pretty reasonable, considering if you go to like Bed, Bath and Beyond, a king-sized bed set is like $300. Yeah. Again, you are going to have to think about thread count. Lady, ladies and gentleman. But still. Yeah, no. That's super cool. I love it. I mean it's really funny. Like you need it for guests. Like if you have guests that stay over. Yeah, it's a good guest bedroom- And you put it in your pizza. You're like you're getting pizza tonight. Yeah. Like it seems really funny. How close are they? okay. So what they want is. They want a lot of money. They want $125,848. That's a very specific amount [LAUGH]. Why not just ask for 126? Okay, so much they got? Right now, but they just started this. So they only have 3,300. Almost 3400. So you guys, anybody interested in a pizza bed, now is your chance. [LAUGH] This is not happening. You know what you could do? You could bag this, and print out the backer thing and give it to somebody as a gift for the holidays. That's true. That's what you can do. You could do that and say well. Whenever it gets delivered. Which is you know, supposedly next. You know, January 2015. So it's not that far off. Or February. That's cool. Early backers does deliveries in like two months. I like of all those this and then the printing. The, you said it was like the Etsy. The person that printed out stuff. Yeah. I love all, like giving somebody one of those gifts cuz it's going to be like something interesting- Something interesting. And different like I'm not going to get them a summer sausage. It's for the person who has everything. Yeah it's for the person that doesn't have enough pizza. You have some other options too. Thank you. If you'd like to help the Pizza Bed come to fruition but don't actually want We're treating this like a charity. a pizza bed you can do this which I really like. You get pizza themed tattoos, you get little cards. This is pizza handwritten thank you note. The one thing that I really liked is the $100 or more you get the ultimate pizza bed topping which is a hand made crocheted rest in pizza pillow. [LAUGH] Oh my god!>> There it is. Rest in pizza. Rest in pizza. I oughta put that on your tombstone. [LAUGH] Your gonna make a little note says I can't enjoy it when I'm dead. Note to self when Kale meets his inevitable doom. Put rest in peace on his grave. That's great. I love it. Under you head stone, I want to make sure it is in the shape of a slice of pizza. You should have saved this for like a pizza episode like on my birthday or something. I'm sorry. Well, then it would have been over by then. That is true-iii So yeah pizza bed so there you go, Also thank you Alec who sent this to us he was the one who alerted us to the pizza bed's existence>>>Yeah we have like one actual user submitted story like a day so it is pretty cool that people are doing that>>>People are actually sending in pretty cool ideas and stuff so thank you Alec. But now. Time of course for your user feedback. [MUSIC] I'm hungry. Today's now you are. Today's user feedback everybody just wants pizza, no. I'm kidding [LAUGH] so last week asked you guys to use two different hashtags on two different shows. TV meme to tell us what meme you'd want to see come to real life and TV fans okay I got it to tell us. What show you'd want a whole website dedicated to with lost of in depth coverage. Alright. So let's do a TV meme really quick. [CROSSTALK] We've got two really good ones. Caleb sent us a Tweet and said, Because who doesn't want free WiFi everywhere all the time? [LAUGH] Hashtag TV memes. That's great. Love that. And then Kyli Rogue [INAUDIBLE] said I'd love a way to let people make the rage comic faces for real. Oh, yeah just like flip it on. Yeah, just flip on and then all of a sudden your face turns into a rage comic. [INAUDIBLE] My Little Pony thing there. Yeah, it's a My Little Pony but with all the, with the troll faces, which is great. Yeah, yeah. If you're, if you're listening you're missing some stuff [INAUDIBLE] You're really missing out on some great visuals. OK so TD fans we asked you guys to tell us what TV show or franchise would you want a whole website dedicated to in honor of Mystery Science Theater getting its own website. And also you know Simpsons World has launched and that's pretty exciting for a lot of people. I've got some for YouTube and you've got the other ones. You can YouTube and then we'll get into tweets. Freethinkcosmonauts said TV, he says Adventure Time. That's a good one. That's a great answer. That website would be trippy, though. It would be really trippy, but it would also have, like, a lot of little nuggets of, like, fun facts, and, like, they would make it really fun. The scroll on the side should be Jake. It's, like, his elongated body, and then you'll scroll down. I like that. Okay. Do you want me to do another one? Yeah, do one more. Okay, PQ7XN2. What an excellent user name. Says Stargate. That would be pretty cool. That's in depth. That's deep. Star Trek would be another really good, there's so many different theories. David Robinson says Chuck Meads an official site. I love Chuck. Shawn MCAD says all things Hitchcock. That's a really good answer. Oh man. See he stuck with my Twilight zoneish answer. High five with that. Man, even just a site dedicated to like Vertigo would be a- Oh yeah. That would you a deep fall in the rabbit hole. Last one I got is Mark Cook says the leftovers deserves its own site. That would be another really good one. Good modern choice. Good, good contemporary, because there are so many, like, very. Thank You Tuber's. yeah, I love that. And then on Twitter for TD fans Jesus wrote to us and said a highlander website with info on all immortals, movie, and show lore. [LAUGH] And apologies for sucky movies. [LAUGH] #therecanbeonlyone. Jesus knows what's up. I like that. I like that he's like I demand also apologies- Right. Rick wrote website for DC comics animated shows and insider news, favorite includes Batman the animated series and Justice League. Yeah. I like that. I like that a lot. I like Batman the animated series. Yeah. Nobody says, nobody says Star Wars? That seems like a really big universe that you'd want. I feel like they're trying to like be like lay off that cuz they feel like it might exist but I dunno. I feel like well see I feel like Star Wars could do. Cuz they do the holocron library. That's like their big thing. Oh yeah. But they have people I'm sure who are employed as like lore master. Even Blizzard. Has like people literal whole job is like Lord Master of War Craft. Like they know everything about War Craft. I want that job. It's a pretty awesome gig. So, yeah I would imagine that would be a really good one too. But I think they have something kind of similar but would be neat to just be able to have this like fully interactive kind of encyclopedia that you just go to one site. Yeah, you like instead of clicking to unlock the website. You activate a light saber when it opens up. [CROSSTALK] A light saber with a hilt you mean? Yep, yep, yep. Yeah I'm getting our light sabers with hilts. All right. And then of course it's time for our very last piece of user feedback. Our phonetographer of the day. [MUSIC] Augusto wrote to us. You know our, our old friend Augusto. Yes. He says, here's the kick. He said. This is 500 meters from my house, Augusto Tee in Canada, taken with Google Nexus 4. You guys are awesome. Your videos are a big part of my day. Augusto, just a dude. That's how he. Augusto, have you ever swam in that? Jump in there? I'm sure. That's beautiful. That's amazing. 500 meters from your house. Does he live, wait, do you live in the trees? Like are you taking it towards you house? [LAUGH] Or is your house right behind you? He's an Ewok? [LAUGH] Yeah, these are questions that I need answered. That's, that's beautiful. That's really stunning. That is really, really stunning. I was, that looks ridiculously good. I love it. What a great picture. Cool, thanks Augusto. Right on the Nexus 4. That's a really nice picture. Yeah. I like when people take these great pictures on older smartphones that are like a few years old. I'm always impressed. Yeah and rock- Cuz people really. Camera. I was going to say people like really. They get great images off of these like older devices that I don't know that I could have done. Sometimes it's the phonetographer, not the phone. That's true. I think it's almost always the phonetographer. Yeah it is. Yeah. That's why we're talking about it. Well if you want to have your phonetography submitted for featuring on our show you can send us your favorite image. Send us a link, makes it a little bit easier to tomorrow@cent.com. You can also send us your hashtag of the day. If you want to give us an answer to that you can send that to us via email. Or, if you absolutely hate email you can find us on social media @TomorrowDaily on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tomorrow Daily TV on Google Plus. [LAUGH] If you're on iTunes, We'll take your thumbs up. Don't forget to follow the podcast, Rate and review. rate and review and. Yep, so there you go. Oh, and don't forget to follow us personally, on Twitter. Yeah, cuz we're lots of fun. Yeah, I'm not. I'm @AshleyEsqueda. Khail Anonymous, I'm @KhailAnonymous. Pretty easy, yeah. Yeah, it's pretty easy to find us online. And we will be, we'll be back tomorrow with a brand new slate of really fun, weird, wacky, science, gaming and geek pop culture news. Well, I won't be back. So Khail is going to go finally go to Disneyland in his stroller tomorrow. Yeah. In a stroller. Finally going to give you that stroller trip you've always wanted in life. Khail, please don't cry when we pass the churro cart. No problem. **** it. All right, that's it for Tomorrow Daily guys. Be good humans. Bye.
