First Look: The WD My Passport Wireless is quite worth the wait

CNET editor Dong Ngo reveals a secret of his job with the WD My Passport Wireless mobile drive, which is, though not perfect, quite a good buy.

Hey, guy, **** Ngo here and this is the My Passport Wireless from WD. Now this is basically a My Passport Turbodrive plus a built in battery and a wi-fi network. The idea is not new, even the name is not new because before this here, we had this CGate Wireless right here. Or the Samsung Wireless, here. And I even have these Lacie Fuel mount. All of these here, they are the mobile wireless media drive. Now the idea is that you plug this one here into a computer and put a ton of content on it, videos, photos, music. And then when you are on the go, you can actually stream that to other devices. Like this tablet, right here, or the laptop. It come with a mobile app to facilitate that screening and that's pretty standard. What is not standard however is that it also come with a built in SD card slot right here. You can use this slot right here to quickly back up an entire SD card onto the drive. This make it very good for a photographer, but let me show you. All right, so let me insert this card in here, right now. Okay. Now note that you can not use the app to actually directly view the content of the SD card. First you have to actually copy the cut content onto the drive first. And here we go. The picture I just took, and the secret is out. I've been talking to nobody the whole time. And by the way, by nobody, I mean my cameraman, a very important nobody, that is. Apart from mobile devices, you can also connect to these my passport wallet is here. The way you do in nas server using FIDO on a Mac or Windows Explorer on a windows computer and there's also these web interface for you to finish the device using a web browser. All right, performance wise this one, it has very well made testing. As a purple drive, it also, the sustained real world stream of some 110 megabyte per second for reading or writing. That is really fast. Now, the mobile apps worked pretty well in my testing but not that it only supports streaming for the file format supported natively by the device. For other [UNKNOWN] format you have to you some Phillip party apps. Now as for the prize this new passport drive is available in three capacity 500 gigabytes, 1 terabyte, and 2 terabyte. That cost $120, $180, and $220 in the U.S. Pricing for the U.K. and off shore is not available at this time but should be in the same vicinity. Another drive that got my full review [iii] you know, [iii] Wyley's mobile media drive on the market. Why? Cause I say so, and that's because I [iii] this has been the first look at the [iii] wireless [iii].
