Tablet gaming is about to take an evolutionary leap. Bridget Carey chats with CNET senior editor Scott Stein on the best iPad games and where the industry is heading.
-- I'm Bridget Carey and joining me today in senior editor Scott Stein who has just completed a expert view of the best iPad games and I checked your list it's quite hard to boil down to thirty. Yeah I imagine it would be I went through them you can probably fit more than half in the category of strategy and puzzles. So years where have you seen. IPad games really shine and fall flat. Well you got -- I like strategy puzzle games on the iPad at but the reason is that I think when -- started at an iPad wasn't a big phenomenon. Get a lot of iPhone ports in your holding nothing in your hand you've -- virtual buttons easier in your hands like this. To -- and so it's easy to bring over to the iPad -- look like that he got more room for those virtual buttons but they're hard to find. -- -- tilting and lifting iPad a little more knowing not that it doesn't have some great you know versions out there games like driving games flight games. You want to experiment with that I think the best games I've seen -- the ones that take advantage of the puzzle elements the ones that use all your fingers and that large screen. And almost like PC games I think angry -- sealed the deal as far as the -- to use and most likely the -- going to be. Puzzle games affordable puzzle games so it tends to be that those are the majority of games and see up there on. Makes sense at that table because how many times that hoping not to steers. Economic for a few novelty games musicians they're just couple bucks -- me wanna experiment with a couple but -- find -- -- -- the -- -- -- friends. Now we're at that -- generation iPad where you have a high resolution Retina Display. That really I mean a lot to the game experience at this point. I'm not a huge amount but I am mostly that's by design you know sort of I'd like -- -- -- 3-D S doesn't really use 3-D all the time there's a bad example but. You know the Apple iPad two was out there and it's out there at the same time as behind the -- and I -- -- a lot developers are making games that take advantage of both. But also those graphics you know at Retina Display you're gonna play -- -- quality graphics and shooters first person shooters and racers. It's hard to get those graphics at Retina Display I can give -- a laptop so. We largely to games that take advantage of the best tend to be ones with static images -- games. To -- games not that there aren't some games like -- -- Skype gamblers for flight games. You know real racing to some of them really show -- that Retina Display. And you'd like to see it in all games but it's not it's not -- central. -- stock price because. App games on iPad are known to be keeping them for five dollars or less that you pointed out that admires hire its. That was on the PC it'll cost at least twice as much so is this culture of keeping the prices low. Discouraging. -- -- developers. From. Making better games and getting more money for them. We look -- -- -- -- and that's -- that is PC -- -- got ported over and you know it's also been on consoles and touch controls are really nice on it. I think people think about making it could be games and then pricing them the way they want to price them. I -- I think you end up with you know maybe some some higher quality games not that there aren't great games priced at just a dollar. But I think maybe some developers. Take the attitude almost going -- making a lot of small low budget games for a dollar each throwing them out there see if one goes viral. And then year old sisters -- lot of these games in app purchases you know it dollar here two dollars there. And I think that's an unfortunate trend -- I think if you pricing game well you let the market figured out of the packet that's sweet spot -- -- promote for awhile at a lower price. But. You can definitely capable of making great games on an iPad I think it's all about the mentality. Of is it worth it for the price you can charge. Now tablets and touch screen gaming is its own -- right now thanks to the iPhone iPad. You've seen it in the next Nintendo Wii U with the controller has a touchpad is seen Apple saying that you're gonna be able to take -- -- -- -- import your television. Microsoft's going to be TC -- two we have two screens now in your tablet gaming environment. The controllers of all plenary can be seen better tablet games because of this much. You think you well because a lot of games revolving touchdown and -- intended -- start it. You have the -- of the stylus and then some iPhone games and iPad games. I've got Microsoft with Smart glass he got the Nintendo Wii U which is a very different concept but it also has touch. PlayStation vita has touch. Up almost all Smartphones. Tablets we have windows eight computers coming out with touch cynics how many devices are gonna have touch and it's inevitable that game developers -- think in terms of that. And -- it's gonna create better games with -- and probably a lot more cross platform games. Great point Scott thank you. Christina I'm Bridget Carey thanks for watching.
