First Look: Textspresso: Coffee with a text

1:08 /

Craving caffeine? Just text this concept coffee-maker to shoot out custom cups of joe.

Instead of sitting around, waiting for your coffee to brew and percolate, how would you like to text your machine and have it ready when you came downstairs to get it? I'm Jessica Dolcourt for CNET. This is the Textspresso. This is a concept text-enabled coffee maker that was whipped up by Zipwhip, which is a startup up in Seattle. Now, the way it works is it's got a Raspberry Pi computer inside. It's about $25, about the size of a credit card. And they've done a lot of hacks on those off the shelf De'Longhi machine. So, they really just hacked it and made it text-enabled. So, when I'm ready to have a coffee, I just text message the number associated with the machine, I give it my order, and I sit around and I wait for the machine to text me back and let me know when my coffee is ready. Zipwhip is not making these units commercially, but they are interested in doing business on the back end with their cloud texting service. One day soon, though, you may see a lot of more machines like this where you can simple text them to get whatever you want. Coffee, Coca-Cola, whatever. I'm Jessica Dolcourt for CNET, and you've been looking at the Zipwhip Textspresso.
