CNET News Video: Step-by-step: Walking tour apps

1:05 /

Wherever you plan on traveling this summer, get more out of your vacation by exploring your surroundings on foot. In this Tech Minute, CNET's Kara Tsuboi reports on some great walking tour apps designed to teach and entertain with every step.

[MUSIC] Walking tours are a great and inexpensive way to explore a new place at your own pace. If you're travelling to Europe the Cities 'talking' app for iPhone has you covered with dozens of tours downloadable at $6.99 each. As you approach an attraction, the app will automatically play the audio- The giant archway in the northeast corner of Hyde Park. To make touring as easy as possible. Walk back through time with the free iPhone or Android app, History Pin. While traveling city streets with the app's interactive map open, historic photos will be layered on top of the present day scene in front of you, giving history buffs an immersive experience of life in the olden days. And if a tour feels too structured, try Field Trip, another free app for iPhone and Android users. As you're wandering you'll get alerts for historical, quirky, or important things nearby. Customize your feed and you can even get dining and shopping tips too. Search your app store for your city or even by attraction and you'll find all sorts of great guides. In San Francisco I'm Kara Tsuboi. Cnet.com for CBS News.
