CNET Update: Shining light on the Kindle Paperwhite

2:52 /

Amazon's latest e-reader is now shipping after a radiant review, Verizon iPhone 5 users should download a bug fix, and say hello to Zynga-themed board games.

It's time to light up your E-reader World. I'm Bridget Carey and this is your CNET update. The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite E-reader, which I have right here is now shipping and we have the full review. CNET executive editor, David Carnoy said why this is the top of the e-reader pack and it was given an editor's choice award. It looks a lot like last year's Kindle Touch. It's just doesn't have a home button in the bottom center. The battery life is great. So you could just keep the screen light on the whole time except of course when you're in direct sunlight. It also has a capacitive touchscreen unlike the competing e-Ink readers. This new Kindle also keeps track your reading speed given an estimated time when you're finished reading a chapter or the rest of the book displayed in the bottom corner. But be aware. There is no audio support in this model. The starting price with advertisements on the home screen is $119 and that's the same price as the Barnes and Noble version, the Nook GlowLight, which has dropped each price to match it. The Nook GlowLight had trouble keeping up with orders and it seems that Amazon's facing similar delays. Orders of the Paperwhite are now delayed until the end of October so if you're thinking about getting one as a holiday gift, you better act fast. Apple has released a bug fix for the iPhone 5 on Verizon. The bug was causing some devices to use data even when the device was connected to a wi-fi network. The updated download can be found under settings. Get ready to find popular Zynga online games on toy store shelves. Hasbro partnered with Zynga to make board games that are inspired by the digital games. Like the Farmville theme, hungry, hungry heard. Cityville is now a version of Monopoly and words with friends is a game similar to scrabble and there's also a draw something with a pad of paper like pictionary. With all these games, players get access to extra features for the digital version or some sort of digital game currency. Netflix has made its iPad app more kid friendly. The streaming video service added a Just for Kids menu option. Only the iPad 2 and new iPad can get it now. But version is coming soon for Android and the original iPads and we should wish a very happy birthday to this guy, the CD. Sony's first player, the CDP-101 went on sale on October 1, 1982 and 6 months later, it arrived in the U.S. costing $1000. Cord cutters will be interested in this story. For the first time YouTube will stream the presidential debates live online. YouTube is getting the feed from ABC News YouTube channel and the debates will also be available in full on YouTube afterward. The first debate takes place Wednesday at 6 p.m. pacific 9 p.m. eastern. That's your tech news update for today, but we have details on all these stories at the blog cnet.com/update. From our studios in New York, I'm Bridget Carey.
