First Look: Seagate Momentus XT

1:56 /

The Momentus XT is an excellent replacement for traditional laptop hard drives. It offers large capacities and SSD-like performance at a fraction of the cost.

[ Music ] ^M00:00:06 >> I have two, 2.5-inch internal laptop hard drives here. The first one is a regular drive that I just pulled out from an HP [inaudible]. The other looks exactly the same as the first, but on the inside it's an entirely different deal. Hello, my name is Dong Ngo and this is the first hybrid hard drive, the Momentus XT from Seagate. It happens to be also our latest product that earned CNET's Editor's Choice Award. It's a hybrid hard drive because apart from having the same type of storage as many other hard drives, the Momentus XT also incorporates 4 gigabytes of flash memory, the kind of storage used only in solid state drives. Admittedly significant is the fact that the drive has a built-in technology called adaptive memory. This technology automatically moves frequently used data to the solid state part of drive for faster access. In our testing this actually worked really well. When used with a new hard drive, the computer performed significantly faster. The Momentus XT is probably the fastest consumer-grade laptop hard drive on the market. It's even faster than some solid state drives. The new hard drive fully supports the SATA 3 gigabyte per second standard and comes in a 2.5-inch, 9-millimeter thickness design. This means it will work in any application where regular laptop hard drives are used. The best thing about the drive is the price at around $135 for the 500 gigabyte version. The Momentus XT is just a fraction of the cost of a solid state solid state drive while offering the same performance and many times the storage space. The drive is also available in a 320-gig and 250-gig versions. For more information on how the drive is totally worth your investment, check out the in-depth review at CNET.com. My name is Dong Ngo, and this has been the first look at the Momentus XT hybrid hard drive from Seagate. ^M00:01:51 [ Music ]
