First Look: Seagate GoFlex Satellite

2:24 /

The GoFlex Satellite is a flexible portable drive and excellent wireless storage extender for the iPad.

-You have hundreds of gigabytes of content that you wanna carry with you on the go and just one iPad. What are you gonna do? Get a few iPads? Either that or have something much better. Hello. My name is Dong Ngo and this is the GoFlex Satellite from Seagate. This is the latest in Seagate's GoFlex family of portable drives and that means it's extremely flexible. Like others, it has 2 separate parts: the drive and the adapter. This means you can keep the drive and change the adapter to make it work with all different types of connections, be it USB 3.0, FireWire, or eSATA. But that's not new. Plus, your iPad doesn't have any peripheral ports anywhere. This is when the new feature of the Satellite comes into play. The drive now has a built-in battery and a Wi-Fi network. It also comes with free iPad app called GoFlex Media. Connect your iPad to this Wi-Fi network, run the app, and voila, you now have access to all the contents stored on the drive up to 100 feet away. You can stream music, video, photos, as well as viewing documents. The drive offers 500 gigs of storage, which means if you don't choose it, you have to buy about 8 iPads to carry the same amount of content--not a good idea. The drive's built-in battery offers about 5 hours of operation and also include a car charger, a wall charger, as well as a USB 3.0 adapter. The drive supports both PC and Macs, and features USB 3.0. It's not perfect, however. Apart from the fact that the Wi-Fi network can support only 3 clients, which is limited, the GoFlex Media app doesn't work in the background. -And nothing to lose. -There, I lost it. This means, you can't listen to music and play puzzle games on the iPad at the same time. It also takes a long time to display a single photo. Hopefully, this can be fixed via an update. Also note that the GoFlex Satellite doesn't allow for access to the Internet. So, if you want to get online, you have to connect to a different Wi-Fi network or get a 3G version of the iPad. At around $200 however, the GoFlex Satellite is worth the investment. After all, it's cheaper than 1 iPad, let alone 8 of them. Nonetheless, to find out if it's worth the investment, check out the full review at CNET.com. Once again, my name is Dong Ngo and this has been the first look at the GoFlex Satellite External Hard Drive from Seagate.
