Samsung's curved OLED TV: The shape of things to come?
-Hello.
I'm Luke Westaway right here at CES 2013 taking a look at Samsung's Curved OLED TV.
Samsung says this is a world first.
I'm here with Scott Cohen from Samsung to ask him exactly what the thinking is.
So Scott, tell me why is this television curved?
What's the thinking?
-Well, this is a concept piece and what we're looking to do is showcase what we can do with OLED.
There were many applications that most people aren't aware that OLED has been used in our phones and camera screens for a long time.
So, showing a large screen curve is really showing off what we can do.
The curve here is gonna give you a little bit more of immersive viewing experience.
But again, concept piece.
So we are pushing forward with our 55-inch OLED which will come out.
We are using RGB, subpixel structures instead of using wide LEDs which is gonna give us a better color accuracy and better color gamma.
-Cool.
Okay.
So you think it's gonna be a bit more immersive not just a showy [unk], showing what we can bend kind of exercise.
But are we going to see this on sale anytime soon?
-You will not see the Curved OLED on sale this year.
You will see our 55-inch on sale this year and you can also see them right behind me.
They are the flat version of this.
-So, Samsung is known for being quite experimental with displays.
We're seeing some transparent screens over there elsewhere on the stand and rumors that you've got flexible smartphone displays.
Where do you see things going in terms of panel technology in the next, say, 2 years?
-In the next 2 years, I see panels are getting bigger.
The average consumer size will go, I mean, just a few years ago it was 46 inches.
We've seen it go up to 55 and now possibly 60.
I see OLED becoming a bigger factor.
The advantages of OLED with power consumption and the color gamma and the black, the speed and all that.
I see that becoming a bigger factor and I see UHD, the ultra high definition or 4K stuff becoming a bigger-- playing a bigger role in the next 2 years.
-Scott Cohen, thank you very much.
Let us know whether you will watch on a curved television or whether you think TV should remain flat and normal.
